Southern Sun has been involved in the Timeshare Industry for over 30 years, originally as a Developer of Timeshare as an exciting new holiday option, while nowadays it is actively involved in the management and administration of the individual Share Block companies that own these Timeshare Resorts. The first development was Umhlanga Sands which started operating as a Share Block company in the early 1980s, followed by Cabana Beach, Beacon Island, Drakensberg Sun, Sabi River Sun and Pine Lake  Resorts. All Southern Sun managed Resorts and Timeshare businesses are grouped under the Southern Sun Resorts brand.
There are in excess of 43,000 Weeks at the Southern Sun Resorts managed Share Blocks, owned by 33,000 individual Timeshare Shareholders. Certain of the Shareholders are Points Clubs and the accommodation owned by these Clubs is available to their members. All Share Block companies are public companies and their owners, the Shareholders in the companies, enjoy the right to occupy a specific Week at their particular Resort.
Southern Sun Resorts manages the collection of levies which are the most important part of the financial wellbeing of the companies, provides a full accounting service to the companies, prepares Quarterly and Annual Reports for Directors and arranges the Annual General Meetings of the companies. In addition, Southern Sun Resorts manages the Resort operation on behalf of the Shareholders to the equivalent of a four-star standard. Southern Sun Resorts has received many awards and accolades for quality and service and are all highly regarded in the South African market.


Southern Sun Resorts manages the staffing of each Resort, ensuring that outsourced operators such as Housekeeping, Cleaning and Security are performing and oversees the Food and Beverage Operations, where these services are offered. General Managers of the Resorts are well experienced, having been trained at Southern Sun in a number of different fields and lead by example. Staff training and motivation is extremely important and the Southern Sun Group has embarked on a programme called Siyakhanya (We Shine), embracing all staff members and instilling the Southern Sun values, being People Centred, Integrity, Reliability, Respect, Innovation and Teamwork. Staff has accepted the programme with enthusiasm and the benefits are visible at the Resorts and noticed by our guests who are always impressed and complimentary at the service level received from the team members.
Southern Sun Resorts also provides a Sales and Rental service for and on behalf of owners who either wish to sell their Weeks, purchase other Weeks or rent out their Weeks when not used. These services are only provided to Share Block companies managed by Southern Sun Resorts. Sales and Rental Agents are all registered with the Estate Agency Affairs Board, accredited by Southern Sun Resorts and are based at the Resort 


In addition, Southern Sun Resorts offers a Share Transfer service which records the changes in ownership from sales and purchases of the shares of the various Share Block companies.
During 2008, after many months of negotiation, the decision was made to again manage and control SunSwop, the exclusive exchange service for Timeshare Owners in the Southern Sun Resorts portfolio. Interval International has been contracted to provide the servicing of members of SunSwop, which includes a call centre, member communication, depositing and exchanges of accommodation and international exchanges. All Shareholders who were previously automatically members of RCI are now automatically members of SunSwop with the added choice that if they wish to retain their RCI membership, they may do so in a private capacity.
Over the last few years, the Resorts managed by Southern Sun Resorts have been refurbished to a very high standard resulting in an increased demand for accommodation. SunSwop will give preference to Southern Sun Resorts Timeshare owners who are extremely loyal to the Southern Sun Resorts brand and their Resorts. SunSwop has been well received by Timeshare owners who can exchange into not only Southern Sun Resorts, but into more than 40 prestigious Resorts in southern Africa as well as being able to exchange internationally into the Interval International Resorts.

Middelvlei: Wine Sponsor

Shaped like a horseshoe on the outskirts of the historic town of Stellenbosch, Middelvlei Wine Estate spreads its vineyards along the northern slopes of the Papegaaiberg. Since 1919 the Estate has been the home of the Momberg family.

While second-generation owner Stiljan Momberg maintains his inspirational presence, today the commitment of his sons; Tinnie in the cellar and Ben in the vineyards, ensures the persistent quality of each vintage.

Built in 1941, the Middelvlei cellar was extended in 1999 with the addition of a maturation facility for 900 small barrels. Tinnie, the winemaker, shares his father's firm belief in traditional winemaking methods. The wine is firstly fermented in open cement tanks, after which the malolactic fermentation process takes place in closed cement tanks.

Having won the sought after General Jan Smuts Trophy for the best young wine in 1997, Tinnie has proved himself a worthy successor to his father. Middelvlei wines have received numerous national and international accolades over the years, the more recent including: Michelangelo gold's, gold and silver awards at the International Wine and Spirits competition and a four and a half star rating in the John Platter Wine Guide.


The estate covers 160 ha of which 130 are planted with Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tinta Barocca, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The Pinotage vines are grown as bush vines, severely pruned in winter, while the rest of the varieties are trellised to keep the grapes cool.

Under Ben's watchful eye the mature vineyards are kept in prime condition, while new plantings are carefully selected to suit the terroir. The body and backbone contributed by the mature vines are complemented by fresh fruitiness derived from more recent plantings.

The dominant soil types at Middelvlei are Hutton and Clovelly -  particularly moisture-retentive in nature obviating the needs for irrigation. Middelvlei was one of the first farms in the country to boast tell tale rose bushes heading the rows of vines. These rose bushes give early warnings of possible diseases among the vines.

The premium Middelvlei brand consists of a Pinotage Merlot blend, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay (unwooded).  The super premium product, Momberg - a blend of Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all matured in new French oak, was released in October 2007. A more recent addition to the range, the Middelvlei Red Falcon, a Merlot Shiraz blend and a soon to follow white, offers exceptional value for money.


The second label ranges under the names Hagelsberg (in Europe) and Brick Road (in the United Kingdom) are produced predominantly for the export market. The origin of the name Hagelsberg dates back to 1679 when Simon van der Stel, then governor of the Cape, first discovered the fertile valley of Stellenbosch, which he later named after himself. His first impression of one of the hills surrounding the valley was in stormy weather and he appropriately named it Hagelsberg - Dutch “hagel” meaning hail. Hagelsberg subsequently changed to Papegaaiberg, as it is referred to today.

The products in this range are Hagelsberg Robyn (unwooded blend of Tinta Barocca, Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon), Hagelsberg Pinotage (unwooded), Hagelsberg Merlot and Hagelsberg Devon Blanc (Chenin Blanc and Columbar blend). 

The Brick Road label owes its name to the winding red brick road that, upon entering the gate, leads the visitor through the rustic natural beauty to the unsurpassed warm Middelvlei hospitality. This range consists of three wines: Brick Road Stellenbosch Chardonnay (lightly wooded), Brick Road Stellenbosch Pinotage and Brick Road Stellenbosch Shiraz.
